Individuals' emotions derived from the challenges they face ultimately make up both the individual and collective experiences forming the human experience. Orwell portrays the party’s suppression of individual intimate relationships through the simile “Sexual intercourse was to be looked on as a slightly disgusting minor operation, like having an enema.” illustrating how individuals are discouraged from forming intimate relationships. This is portrayed through Winston's anecdote to Julia about his previous relationship with Katherine “To embrace her was like embracing a jointed wooden image.” The simile of wood conveys Winston’s compliance to get married to fulfil society's expectations illustrating his overwhelming fear of being unloved and alone. Therefore Orwell illustrates the emotions derived from the suppression of intimate relationships. Furthermore, the party’s suppressive state ultimately affects individuals' perception of intimate relationships seen through the hyperbole of Winston to Julia “She had become a physical necessity.”However although Winston may see his relationship with Julia as a genuinely intimate bond, their ‘love’ is exploited by the party in Room 101 torture session where Winstons through the exclamatory tone “Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! I don’t care what you do to her.” This reveals how their bond wasn’t genuine, predominantly composed under the suppressive society circumstances where this bond was the only option for a relationship composed of ‘love’.
