At the start of the movie “Stand by Me”, four boys go on a journey to find a deceased classmate. Throughout the movie, they experience many different emotions. In the beginning, they are quite anxious to find the dead body, but when they discover their classmate their feelings change. Although they don’t quite know it, they start to understand the meaning of empathy. Once the boys find Brower’s body, they show empathy by how they deal with the situation.
Where would modern civilization be without empathy? Empathy allows us to relate to others in a way that is meaningful during tragedies. Empathy is what makes people human. Without it, humans would act in ways that are closer to zombies or robots. A scary depiction of a world without empathy is “Beggar in the Living Room,” by Bill Watkins.
A tough exterior can mask a gentle soul. In the bildungsroman, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, there are several examples of this. Such examples are his empathy towards other people, his thoughts on fighting, and his values he holds. In the novel, the reader views life through the protagonist, a troubled kid who seems cold and hard but under his facade lies a sensitive boy who longs for companionship.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines empathy as “the power of projecting one’s personality into the object of contemplation.” Furthermore, Katie Rose Guest Pryal proposes that empathy takes action, not just a feeling and emotion. Often confused with sympathy, empathy requires the ability to understand a predicament from another person’s perspective, while sympathy only entails the feeling of pity for another ’s difficulty. Although, in To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus advocates to empathize with others, Pryal rather implies that Atticus exhibits sympathy.
Poetry is an effective means used to convey a variety of emotions, from grief, to love, to empathy. This form of text relies heavily on imagery and comparison to inflict the reader with the associated feelings. As such, is displayed within Stephen Dunn 's, aptly named poem, Empathy. Quite ironically, Dunn implores strong diction to string along his cohesive plot of a man seeing the world in an emphatic light. The text starts off by establishing the military background of the main protagonist, as he awaits a call from his lover in a hotel room.
It is very important that writers are able to send a message to their reader with their book. Authors best do this by bringing about empathy. In order to send this message, authors often develop strong characters that go through various problems and struggles. The book, To Kill a Mockingbird, shows this very well with its characters Scout Finch and Tom Robinson. This book helps the readers learn from the character’s reactions to their problems.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. To me the word empathy in “To Kill A Mockingbird” means “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.” Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” suggests that empathy is a universal feeling, but everyone experiences it in different occasions and in different ways. Many people empathize through real life experiences. Scout is one of those people.
The word sympathy is defined in the Oxford dictionary as “feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else's misfortune.” Many people feel sympathy for their friends and family when they are going through hard times. Sympathy can also be felt for people you don't know personally, such as characters in a book or movie. While sympathy comes easily to most, some people may find it difficult to harbor these emotions for other people. A reason for this may be that they weren’t, or aren’t, shown much sympathy at home, and it has hardened their hearts.
Empathy Equals Laziness What is the definition of empathy? According to Oxford Languages the definition of empathy is “The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” but in our honest opinion is there really such a thing as empathy in our justice system? Or is it just an objective spruced up by the people in lower society?

Empathy and Service The positive impacts of empathy spread further than many may think. In fact, the award-winning 2019 film Feeling Through, created by Doug Roland Films Giant Hunter Media, illustrates this idea. The short drama shows how a young, homeless boy, Tereek, and a deafblind man, Artie, share their struggles; through leaning on each other, they find comfort. Thus, the friendship that grows between Tereek and Artie demonstrates the idea that acting with empathy allows individuals to be of service to each other.
Final Paper I think through the communication, humanity explores, learns, discovers a smaller world. More contacts, more interplay, more exchanges, more trade. Peoples and cultures and individuals come to understand each other better. Social ties strengthen and cultural energy surges. Communication is in fact a staple of human interaction.
During this semester, I gained a lot of skills and knowledge about interpersonal relations. As a human being, as a member of the "global village", everyone need to communicate with others. It is important to learn how to communicate well and how to build a healthy and positive interpersonal relationship with others. Like the textbook’ name “Looking Out Looking In”, we looked in the communication itself, looked out the language barrier, nonverbal messages and effective listening, and looked at relational dynamics. I learned and recognized about how environmental factors can impact our communication.
Empathy is one of the things that bonds us as human beings; being able to feel for somebody else’s problems when they clearly do not affect us at all is why valuing literature is so important.
Involves choices- All communication involves choices, some of which people actively consider and others that follow cultural norms and seem almost automatic. we interpret actions as good or bad, right or wrong, appropriate or inappropriate. REFRENCES FROM THE MOVIE- The movie really makes clear of the importance of communication for humans, if to other humans, themselves, or to objects. Without communication we would not be able to survive.
