During the start of the 1920's The United States was looking for a new way of transportation. Dirigibles were a new thing to American's, but the United States want to pioneer air travel and revolution it and introduce it with New York City as a way of travel. The engineers and architects of the Empire State Building encountered many problems allowing blimps and dirigibles to fly and be used as a way of transportation for the City Of New York.

European country's had built dirigibles before America but there was one mayor issue that erode, To make the blimps and dirigibles float lighter pressured gases need to be added in cotton tanks inside the blimps. Hydrogen a very flammable gas was used very commonly in these blimps and pose huge concerns which in such a growing city that if a accident were to happen many people were to die.
Furthermore there were many designs of air travel of blimps and dirigibles so even with the new designed mooring mast it couldn't take all blimps and board perfectly every single time. In conjunction with that, it would be only tied to the front so the tail of the blimp would sway in every which direction on which the wind was blowing air from. These blimps were very large, spanning up to four blocks could cause serious structural damage to near by buildings when strong winds were present.
Also when dirigibles and blimps landed they needed to be weighted down by large lead or sand bags that needed to be dangle to stay close the ground. With such a tight streets in New York City they would just dangle down above pedestrians. Which would be hugely dangerous if any of them were to
