Bain Capital director Steve Ellis used stimulation when Bain hired people during the dot com bust. Since it worked the previous downturn, he is using the same method again. He could get top talent people at a lower cost while other companies were still cutting people. He could hire people to escape jobs that they were stuck in due to the poor economy. Steve Ellis feels that there is an opportunity for adding talent that would otherwise be much harder and costlier to acquire in a good economy. Feeling is his affective component. He believes in the hiring now approach because Bain did the same thing during the dot com bust. Believing is a cognitive component. His behavioral approach is to act on his feeling and thinking, which he does by targeting former consultants stuck in jobs and recruiting of students who are graduating with MBA’s. How are Home Depot and Best Buy trying to increase employee involvement? Both companies are using employee engagement by offering the employees a way to help with the current situation. Home Depot is providing reduced sales goals and targets due to the economy but this allows the employees a real chance at getting bonuses. Best Buy is looking for suggestions to help cut costs. The workers can see that Best Buy is not hiring and the next step will be cuts so there is an incentive to find ways to cut costs. Employees can see that leadership is trying to involve employees to help find solutions to support the company. Both groups of employees know there is an urgency to solve cost-cutting issues or increase profits. This will give them focus on their jobs.
