Chapter 19 begins with Pao Yu’s secret visit to his maid’s, Aroma, home. Aroma, who knows how to pull at Pao-Yu’s heart strings, tells Pao-Yu that her family is playing to but her back. Pao’ Yu’s deep affection for Aroma causes him to be deeply saddened upon hearing this news. Aroma states that she will demand to remain with Pao-Yu and his family under three conditions. 1. He will stop telling sarcastic jokes about studying. 2. He will stop speaking without thinking first. 3. Pao-Yu has to stop playing with things meant for girls. Aroma imposes these conditions on Pao-Yu as part of her plan of remodeling his into a great feudal scholar. Although Aroma is from a poor family and is only a maid, she is very wise and clever. The Imperial consort, Yuan Ch’un, sends a riddle to her family house foe everyone to guess. Immediately, Pao-Chai answered the riddle, asserting her intelligence among all the young woman around her.
Chapter 23 mainly delineated the growing relationship between Pao-Yu and Tai-Yu. One of Pao-Yu’s maids gives him romantic lyrics to read and strangely enough, Pao-Yu’s favorite is forbidden by the government. The Government has forbidden this Libretto because it is deemed to be “Anti- Feudal”. I find it very funny and understandable that Pao-Yu choose this as his favorite. Perhaps this also works as a foreshadow of Pao-Yu’s fate. Pao-Yu enjoys this work so much that he shares it with Tai-Yu, who too falls in love with the Libretto. The cute couple read together and Pao-Yu occasionally quotes the Libretto to compliment Tai-Yu on her beauty. This chapter shows the strong relationship between Pao-Yu and Tai-Yu because their mutual understanding of love and what it means to them is why they both loved the Libretto so much. It also shows that Tai-Yu is possibly against certain feudal restraints when it comes to love and
