A thirty- seven year old nurse practitioner was working at an urgent care when a 23-year-old graduate student arrived. Complaining of fever, chest pains, and cough. He had a temperature of 101°F. He also stated that he had been unwell for the last couple of days. The nurse practitioner completed a brief examination of the patient, and gave a diagnosis of bronchitis.
This case study highlights the conflict that can arise between nurse practitioners (NP) and physicians due to lack of proper communication, poor physician attitude, and lack of respect. Clarin (2007) labels these items as barriers that inhibit effective collaborative care and ultimately hinders the goal of medical institutions. In this case study, the way that the physician treated the new NP encourages other physicians in the practice or staff members that it is acceptable to treat another provider in this manner. This poor behavior will continue the cycle of disrespect and distrust when we should be collaborating with one another in the healthcare field. Not to mention, creates an unhealthy work environment.

To be afforded the opportunity for our heroes to attend and be treated, at little to no cost, for a wide range of ailments from the common cold, to a mental health disability, or for the possibility of a healing surgery is a well-deserved and a wonderful privilege. As Advanced Practice Nurses we can support those experiencing family violence or threatening behavior by first screening patients for domestic violence so that they are properly identified, participating in preventative efforts, advocating for victims, and providing treatment measures to those effected. According Flaugher (2013) all adult patients should be routinely screened for domestic violence.

During this time, it has become apparent that Shenita is an example of a good citizen who is committed to academics, as well as to growing in her professional life while also helping others. Ms. Freeman is the Program Director of the WISH (Wellness and Independence for Seniors at Home) program. This program identifies seniors in Montgomery County Maryland that are at an increased risk for hospitalization.

They help to decide the patient’s medicine, treatment, recovery, and educate the them and their families on post-medical treatment.
