“Anatomy of a Rumor” by psychologist Daniel Goleman, introduces the reader to how rumors work. Typically, rumors dealing with death or disease are the most commonly shared. Goleman successfully uses results from various research projects to explain to the audience that fear and anxiety play a role in why these rumors are spread. The selection is divided into sections and begins with a few outrageous rumors found by psychologist Dr. Allan J. Kimmel.
She may have started these rumors, but she also tried to help put an end to it to save Elizabeth. While she wasn’t able to save her she was able to save what little bit of her soul she had left after these rumors. Another person who was deeply affected by these lies was Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail Williams who all the rumors started from hates Elizabeth for being with man she loves.
Like Abigail utterly told liars about how Elizabeth spirit had stabbed her at the dinner table but actually Abigail framed Goody Proctor with the doll Mary Warren had made as evidence to stable herself. Also Abigail accused Mary Warren for working with the devil in the setting of act three in the courtroom. The girls in courtroom acted as if Mary spirit was attacking them ,to scare her back to their side. Giles Corey also accused Thomas Putnam for being gluttonous for more land and therefore accusing his neighbors for it.
(Lines 30-34) “This phenomenon of people having difficulty understanding Shakespeare is hardly new. It is a problem that the editors of the First Folio addressed in 1623, just seven years after the death of Shakespeare.” Using this piece of evidence Mack proves that even people from Shakespeare’s time admitted it was difficult to grasp Shakespeare’s way of writing. They knew well that it took multiple reads to understand the meanings behind Shakespeare’s words in his plays.
It shows whoever reads it why lying is a sin. A society or puritans, focused on perfection of religion, is shocked by an occurrence of witches. Witches are the Devil’s evildoers, and should be persecuted at once. Abigal, the drama queen of the play, attempts to kill the wife of the man she loves with witchcraft. They are found, but whenever Abigal and the others attending are being accused, they lie, blaming others of being witches.
One of the main characters named Abigail Williams causes most of the rumors in the play. She is the leader of the younger girls who start the trouble in the town. The way she acts is very similar to the way a highschool girl may behave, but on a more extreme level. One of the first things she does in the
It reveals how people commit cruel acts out of selfish intentions. In this situation, the girls claim to “come to Heaven’s side” by pointing fingers at others for witchcraft, although they were only doing so to get themselves out of their own trouble. These acts of cruelty reflect upon the evil motives of the perpetrators that become more common after it is done once, as seen through the continuous trials and suspicions, which acts as one of the most major conflicts in the play. Without these cruel accusations, there would be neither plot nor ending. With this same situation, it can be concluded that accusations become more frequent during an interval of time when there are more people accusing.
Hamlet Character deception is a common characteristic that has and will be a reflecting characteristic in literature for centuries. In many of William Shakespeare’s tragedies, deception, whether positive or negative, is being used to mislead, to protect characters, or to hide a crime or future crime. Analyzing why the characters are using deception against each other is very important to the reader’s understanding of the work as a whole. In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, He uses Hamlet’s deception of character and also the character’s use of deception towards Hamlet to carry out the overall theme of the tragedy. The theme that is represented, is that in able to get malicious revenge, you must be able to act as if you are someone different than your true self while in turn, being able to deal with others deceiving you.
A large factor that significantly affects the plot of the play is the scene of the girls dancing in the woods. What happened is no where near what the rumors and lies that were being spread explained. The truth was that the girls, Betty, Abigail, Mercy, Susanna, Ruth, and Mary were dancing in the woods with Tituba, who was conjuring spirits, when Reverend Parris walked up and found them Betty became frightened and fell ill. The first lie that was started was by Reverend Parris.
The play had a realistic representation of women who were accused of being witches. In that day those accused of being such were sentenced to death, evidently the fear was real and it led to horrible
People are responsible for the consequences of their actions. When people are not responsible for their own actions, they tend to blame others for their problems. The lack of personal responsibility makes us as human beings, less responsible. The more you lack personal responsibility, the more you make excuses in order to get out of your own personal problem. In the story, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, it shows Macbeth being a person that has little to no personal responsibilities.
How can someone be so clueless about what people are telling him and the truth? Then there is putnam who has a history of accusing people of things like witchcraft so that he can buy their land. Throughout the whole play he has been against everyone and is just trying to gain

Shakespeare was a famous author and poet that wrote extremely well-known texts, such as “Romeo and Juliet” and “Hamlet.” Shakespeare lived during the Renaissance when art and science advanced and he was one of the major contributors to this historical period. “Shakespeare Influences the way we speak now” by Hephzibah Anderson, “William Shakespeare’s Impact on Theatre” by Octane, and “How Outrage Built Over a Shakespearean Depiction of Trump” by Sara Krulwich suggest that Shakespeare had a great influence on many aspects of society, such as the phrases we use, style of theater, and is a figure of inspiration to many people. Shakespeare has contributed to many well-known phrases that are still used to this day, showing his significance in history.
On the other hand Thomas Lux also uses this line to bring out to each and every person that the voice that is heard when you read silently always will speak something that is not the same as to how another person might see that word or thing, “It is your voice saying, for example, the word barn that the writer wrote but the barn you say is a barn you know or knew” (Lux 16-20). Using this for example everyone has/have a different mindset, image, and meaning to certain things and words. Thomas Lux added this to help add more about the voice that is heard in everyone’s head. Lux graduated from Emerson College and attended the writing program at University of Iowa for a year before beginning a long teaching career.
