Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was written in 1962 a time filled with civil unrest. Kesey use of the “black boy” versus colored in This Side of Paradise reflected the time period. Historically, the word boy meant a male child, but during the 1962 “boy” was used in a derogatory way to belittle Black men. Environmental influences are one of the factors that influenced in the novel. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest takes place in a mental hospital. Let’s take a look at the following, “they don’t bother not talking out loud about their hate secrets when I’m nearby because they think I’m deaf and dumb. Everybody thinks so.” Paranoia? As we could see his language is disorganized and doesn’t fit into Standard English, however it
