Overview. Automotive usage is increasing in the US and elsewhere in the world. There were 700 million motorized vehicles registered in the world in 1999, with the US alone contributing over 200 Million passengers, cars and light trucks. In 1990s, the number of cars worldwide grew three times faster than the population and the number of cars increased six times faster than the population from 1969 to 1945. The Global Competion. For instance, ten years ago, GM's market share for 2013 stood at 17.9 percent, followed by Ford at 15.9 percent and Chrysler at 11.3 percent, for a total of about 45 percent for the three Detroit companies.
