1. One of the traits of an epic hero is that they are just ordinary people who overcome great challenges. Ody is not a god or a demi-god, but throughout the book he does things that no mortal man could do. He travels to the underworld and walks out alive, and he also is the only man who has listened to the songs of the Sirens and lived to tell it. On his journey he encounters many difficult tasks.
Epic Hero or Epic Zero Would one think of Odysseus as an epic hero? Although he had excessive pride and cheated on his wife, he has many traits that makes him an epic hero. For example, Odysseus was able to come up with a genius plan to injure Polyphemos before he could eat any more of Odysseus’ men, that demonstrates the trait of intelligence. Odysseus has been through many hardships and has always used his traits to help him get through any obstacle. Throughout Odysseus’ journey home, he demonstrates leadership, intelligence, and superhuman strength.
In this passage from The Odyssey, Homer uses an epic simile comparing Odysseus’ crew to calves and Odysseus to a cow and a second simile comparing Odysseus to Ithaca in order to portray the sense of reliance and loyalty the men have for their leader. In the book, Odysseus has just returned from Circe’s palace where some of the crew had disappeared. Since the men chosen to venture into Circe’s home did not return, the rest of the crew thought Odysseus would also not make it back to the ship. When Homer writes that the men are, “bucking out of their pens, lowing nonstop, jostling, rushing round their mothers (455-456),” he conveys the men’s desparation to get to Odysseus. The phrase, “bucking out of their pens (455),” refers to the fact that Odysseus’ crew is trapped and helpless without him.
In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, and the movie, The Princess Bride, directed by Rob Reiner, both epic heroes have lots of metaphorical similarities, but also have drastic differences. In The Odyssey, a man named Odysseus is trying to sail home to Ithaca, but runs into lots of problems. In The Princess Bride, a side character named Inigo is on a quest to kill his father’s murderer. Both heroes, Odysseus and Inigo eventually reach a low point, but then miraculously return to greatness; however, Odysseus and Inigo have different quests. Odysseus and Inigo are similar for many important reasons.
In the Epic Novella, The Odyssey, by Homer, both heroic and unheroic character traits of the main character Odysseus are found. On the journey of return to his homeland, Ithaca, him and his men are challenged by various obstacles. His journey shows multiple examples of heroic and unheroic character traits of himself. He was known as a great warrior for being intelligent and quick-witted; although he was selfish and arrogant.

In the Odyssey, however, Homer clearly defines a hero as a humble, determined, and loyal individual; thus, according to Homer, it is not enough to claim to be a hero, but it is also important to exhibit those qualities that Homer values as heroism. Odysseus, despite claiming heroism, upholds these traits inconsistently, as seen in his taunting of Polyphemus. In contrast, Telemachus, Odysseus’ overlooked son, dramatically grows up over the course of the epic and ultimately reveals his truly heroic qualities by the end of the poem. Thus, because Odysseus claims to be a hero, but fails to remain humble, determined, and loyal throughout the epic, he is not a hero.
