Looking at Structure in a Literary Work Beowulf is an epic poem about a warrior who saves a land and becomes the king. He goes to the land of the Danes because he feels it's his obligation to kill Grendel. The anglo saxons had a code that was basically to gain as much glory through fighting as possible. Though not very many are still recognized today. Beowulf is just a fictional character so they were able to give him whatever traits he needed to be the first superhero. All of the superhero’s are based off of the epic poem so you see a lot of similarities between them. Although there are heroes like Deadpool who are just crazy and are just supposed to be funny while doing something good. Except they don't accomplish their goals through very moral actions. Each section of the poem has three parts also and the first one is the speech before the fight. When he addresses the king he asks if he will allow him to kill the monster. Beowulf is really polite and respectful because he is talking to the king. Part of the anglo saxon code is to be very respectful of your elders. The second part is the fighting of the monster. When he fights Grendel he does it without any armor or weapons because the monster didn't have any. He did this because it would have brought him more glory and that is an essential part of the anglo saxon code. Then after the fighting there is another speech except this time it is from Wrothgar the king. In the end of it he tells Beowulf to be wary of pride because if he doesn’t it will kill
