This passage comes from the novel The Hobbit written by J.R.R Tolkien, which is made into a movie by the director Peter Jackson. Peter Jackson made many alterations to the movie in hope of making the story more appealing but he was not regarding the intentions of the author. This story
For example in one of the paragraphs it states, “Then the hobbit slipped on his ring, and warned by the echoes to take more than hobbits care to make no sound.” This shows how Bilbo uses the ring to his advantage so the dragon doesn't see him. Another time he uses the ring is when he makes an offer to the dwarves that he will go back down to check if the dragon was still asleep, “Now I will make you an offer. I have got my ring and I will creep down this very noon—then if ever Smaug ought to be napping—and see what he is up to.”

“Could you reach this flask if I threw it over to you?” asked Ulrich suddenly; “There is good wine in it, and one may as well be as comfortable as one can. My topic for this ISP will be the similarities between Victor Frankenstein and his creation. In the novel, Frankenstein and his creation seem to be complete opposites, but as I kept reading I noticed that the two are actually quite similar. I chose this topic because it interests me. I really liked the way my perspective on the two characters drastically changed just as I read more of the novel.
Tolkien’s highly intricate imagery of malignance makes apparent the uncertainty encircling the company and sets the frightful mood over which Bilbo’s courage must prevail. His ominous description of Mirkwood Forest explains the hesitation in the company to pass onto the realm where “The entrance to the path was like a sort of arch leading into a gloomy tunnel”(153). The imagery evoked by “Trees … too old and strangled with ivy… to bear more than a few blackened leaves” (153) places the reader in the foreboding atmosphere in which the company is presently ensnarled, and effectively forewarns of sorcery, monsters and misery at play. Days into the forest, constant hunger gnaws at the company, leading them to disperse round and round in an entranced dream-like state. Then, somewhere in the pitch-dark night, Bilbo strikes dead a most nefarious enemy.
There was a knocking at the door. Already! He sat as still as a mouse, in the futile hope that whoever it was might go away after a single attempt. But no, the knocking was repeated. The worst thing of all would be to delay.
Carson TenBroeck Ms. Adourian English 1 3/1/23 THUG thesis In today's society, the lack of awareness of the other side is tearing us apart. Angie Thomas' novel, "The Hate U Give," tackles issues of racism, police brutality, speaking up, and perspective. While initially appearing to be the story of a woman coping with the loss of her friend, the novel delves into deeper themes through Starr's narcissistic and manipulative behavior and her experiences with Chris. Starr has a near psychopathic ability to change her personality, and manipulate people into thinking she is on their side, giving her the ability to have people let her into their personal lives and see their views.
