Epiphany: A Textual Analysis

A Cliché is an expression that was once a new way to describe or express something but has been used so often that it is tiresome and boring to hear, yet again! (Literary Devices 2016) The perfect example of how a cliché comes to pass would be the word “epiphany.” Several years ago, talk show host Oprah Winfrey mentioned on a show that she had bumped her head on the side of the bathtub or something and serenely proclaimed that she “had an epiphany.” And suddenly every female between the ages of Soccer-Mom and Menopause was “having an epiphany” about one thing or another at the alarming rate of about five each per day. Thankfully, most women have calmed down now and just rationally “realize” things, like normal people.

Sexist language can be something as simple as referring to those working for the police department as “Police Men” which I would not take as intentionally sexist. On the other hand, blatantly teasing a female construction worker by calling her a “bull-dyke,” just because one is threatened by the nature of her job, would be intentionally sexist. My Mom was a construction worker, as feminine as a woman, and as tough as a man, and is not a lesbian.

Racist language is meant to denigrate a specific ethnic group. The example given in the textbook is a specific reference that I want to speak to…In my last job as a customer service representative for a bank, customers would call in and complain, “You people…etc...” Our Customer Service Reps who were black took such offense to it, claiming that it was racist. Although I don’t generally need to use them in business settings, I consider them a secret code in my personal life, as I also think they are quite funny, especially when they are original.
