Why E-Sports Players Should Receive Equal Payments and Regulations to Traditional Athletes

Millions of people watched online, the venue was sold out, and the prize money was over $1 million dollars. Yet this wasn’t the Super Bowl, the Indy 500, or the Olympics. This was the League of Legends World Championship. The people competing were not considered athletes, but instead were considered E-sports players. They also do not face the same rules as conventional athletes, though they both provide entertainment and garner about the same amount of audience.

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a sport is defined as "physical activity (as running or an athletic game) engaged in for pleasure or exercise" ("Sport", 2018). E-sport, on the other hand, is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as "A multiplayer video game played competitively for spectators, typically by professional gamers." LAN refers to Local Area Network, which was a form of technology that came to gaming in the late 90's, was popular in the early 2000's and is still in use today. LAN technology allows two people to share data from computer to computer over a networking cable. Once people began to realize this could be used for gaming it changed the tournaments. Instead of only being able to have a couple of players on one machine, you could have a hundred or more people each on their own separate machines but play the game together. Instead of the machine's themselves being the limitation to the amount of player, now it was the game itself that limited the number of players who could compete. Now e-sports tournament would still be locally based but could involve more people and therefore increase the amount of prize money (Lee et al., 2011, pg.
