At the beginning of Anthem Equality has changed his mind about a lot of things in the beginning of the story. Equality got picked to be a street sweeper by the government, but he really wanted to be a scholar but couldn’t because of the government. Equality had a rough life. Well he was a street sweeper but he was smart enough to be a scholar the government did not think he was. Citizens of Equality's society live in a dehumanized state. When children are born they go straight to the house of the infants, they never get to see or meet their parents and the parents never know them. Kids never get the support a family would give you emotionally and physically. Plus parents get matched with random people to have a kid with and Equality describes it as a messy and shameful. Another way they are dehumanized is making them wear the same white robes as everyone else all the time.
Equality knows that individuality is wrong and it affects everyone: “It is a sin to write this” (17). Everything you do affects everyone around you. For example, you live with your family and you decide to drop out of school and stay home and do nothing, than your parent get tired and will not have a choice but to kick you out. Ayn Rand successfully captures the negatives of an overrated ideology and presents an unorthodox perspective on the matter. In conclusion, Equality's true motives behind his work are much more selfish than they first appear to be. Equality strives to fulfil his own personal desire rather than contribute everything to society, and this isn't necessarily a negative thing.
Equality is something people want till people actually have it. Equality often limits a person’s abilities and disables to do something for themselves or inspire themselves. Equality's, the main character in the book Anthem, the primary motivation is proving that he is smart enough to become a scholar. Equality has a right to be motivated in this way since he believes that he can help the society so he is giving into the collectivism. I think that if everyone was motivated in this way, there would be a more progressive society where people sought to improve themselves and society at the same time.
In today’s society, there is much talk of equality. Equality is a seemingly flawless ideal in which every person could find true happiness. No one person would be above another and everyone would find fulfillment by being made equal. What if, however, equality was not what is seemed? What if this perfect ideal was distorted to mean something more sinister?
One similarity is that both sides are trying to achieve the goal of making an imprint on others around them. Although, a difference is that the author’s side is a more realistic scenario and non-fictional while Equality’s side is more within the realm of Anthem and completely fictional. Additionally, another similarity is the fact that both sides can be applied to modern day society in the sense that everyone wants to make the world a better place and no matter where we come from, or what we do, we can change the world. We can make an imprint on society that inspires generations to come. Lastly, there is one more major difference between the two sides of Equality’s motivation.
Equality is a complex issue because it depends on the standards of the person defining it. It should mean that everyone has the same opportunity as everyone else, but that is not true. Equality is defined as the quality or state of having the same rights, social status, etc.” (Merriam-Webster). In Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron”, the government set standards for being equal at the expense of the individuality and freedom of the citizens.
Income Inequality Income Inequality or “wage gap” is a big topic for freedom fighters and liberals for the simple fact that it isn’t equal for everyone. Because the wage gap is so prominent it's one of the biggest “facts” that discrimination is still apart of everyday American society. The wage gap from these radical interest groups think the economy is get a dollar take a dollar instead of a free flow economy. This misguided idea of the economy is absolutely not true and isn’t at the fault of the Government, but the people.
America prides itself on being one of the most effective democratically governed counties. The idea of the American dream is that all people have equivalent political freedoms and a responsive government. However the effectiveness of social equality is being threatened by increasing inequality in the United States. Economic inequality in the US has expanded drastically. The wealth gap has had drastic changes over the past 35 years.
Equality would be making everyone a 5/10 in looks, smarts, and so on, but he government makes everyone a 1/10. They’d make the smart people a bit stupider and the not so smart people smarter. People would get some handicaps to be less beautiful but others would get some to make them look better. The government would have too big of a hassle to make everyone equal so they just make the smart people worse. A big question is, does the government have handicaps too?
When a class is fair, students are more motivated to learn making success a more sustainable goal. Equality in a classroom means that all students have access to the same resources. All students have a desk, textbooks, the ability for ask for help, etc. In Mrs. S’s 1st grade STEM class, she has a white board that students write their name on when they have to go to the restroom(3.1.1). This is an example of equality in the classroom because every student is allowed to go use the restroom by signing out on the board.
