Equality can sometimes be a good idea and sometimes be a bad thing. Equality means that everyone is in the state of being equal and not different in every way. By forcing equality causes a hurricane of affects later because there will always be that one individual that finds out what is happening and believes that it needs to be changed. That one person in this book is Jonas, he is the one that sees what is wrong and acts upon that issue. I believe that in The Giver by Lois Lowry, having everyone equal, not have memories and to not have a choice causes more problems than having a memories, having a choice, and being different. The reason why I believe that not having memories is a problem because then the society does not think to why things are the way they are. The book says, “There’s nothing we can do. It’s always been this way. Before me, before you, before the ones who came before you. Back and back and back” (Lowry 167). In the book it says, "It was against the rules for children or adults to look at another’s nakedness; but the rule did not apply to new children or the Old. Jonas was glad. He couldn’t see why it was necessary. He liked the feeling of safety here in this warm and quiet room; he liked the expression of trust on the woman’s face as she lay in the water unprotected, exposed, and free." (Lowry 55). Jonas is feeling what everyone should feel towards another person. He is feeling love and importance for a girl. This feeling is taken away from the society because they want to choose who their spouse will be and how they will live. Jonas sees what is taken and he starts feel for a friend.
