The Giver is a novel by Lois Lowry, about a dystopian society. At the beginning of the book, Jonas was obedient and loyal to his community; but when he gets assigned the job of the receiver he gains knowledge about his community which including colors, animals, and most of all, feelings. When Jonas learns these things, his opinion about his community changes, and he starts to feel resentment, anger, and hatred.

At the beginning of the book, Jonas felt loyal and obedient toward his community. In chapter 16 pg 157 Jonas says “It seems to work pretty well that way, doesn't it? The way we do it in our community?” Jonas asked. “I just didn't realize there was any other way, until I received that memory.” This quote shows how Jonas feels very loyal to his community because he is talking about how after he and Lily grow up they will probably never see their parents ever again, and in this quote, he is saying how it works the way they do it even though he is sad about it. This quote also shows how he didn't know any other way to live until he became the receiver. In chapter 18 pg 188 Jonas says “He killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realizing. He continued to stare at the screen numbly.” In this sentence, Jonas realizes what true release is. He feels betrayed by his father and his community for lying to him. In this quote, he realizes that if his community lied to him about something super important like a release, they might be lying about other things too. I completely understand why Jonas feels hatred and resentment towards his father and his community because he just saw his father kill a newborn baby and lie to his face about how release works. I would feel the same way if someone did that to
