Broken Chain by Gary Soto is one of the two stories that I picked, the other being Seventh Grade still by Gary Soto have lots of differences and lots of similarities you notice only when you compare them. Both Broken Chain and Seventh grade have many thing alike, even though they are two unique stories. Both have the main characters ,Victor and Alfonso, who want to impress a girl they know and like. But still they run into some hard times trying. They embarrass themselves in the process too.
The Glass Castle: A Heartwarming Story About A Unique Lifestyle "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls is truly on of the most amazing memoirs I have ever read. It contains a beautiful message, that no matter how man troubles and difficulties befall a family, they are still a family and their love binds them together for life. The author uses many literary techniques to portray her message and she structures the memoir into three section, in the first portion she writes about how happy their family is and slight with hints of doubt. The second portion shows disappointment and the realization that their life is not as good as it seemed, and the third portion is about their life without their parents holding them down, but also letting them back
Author Shannon L. Alder once said, “One of the greatest regrets in life is being what others would want you to be, rather than being yourself.” This is evident throughout the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst. The story starts with the birth of a physically ill brother who has heart problems and is predicted to die. Surprisingly, he survives and his older brother nicknames him Doodle as they set out on their crusade to help Doodle become a normal kid and overcome his health symptoms, but Brother instead takes a dark turn to achieve his goal no matter the cost and the consequences. Brother’s cruel and unforgiving persistence pushes Doodle to the limit both physically and mentally throughout the story to the point of Doodle’s passing.

In the dramatic short story Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst a boy named Doodle and his brother encounter many obstacles similar to the brothers in the movie Simon Birch even though they come from starkly different family situations. Doodle and Simon were always the underdogs and wanted to be accepted. Doodle wasn’t accepted by his brother whereas Simon’s brother always looked at him like an equal. There brothers teach them many things like baseball and how to walk. Simon and Doodle are always happy and never sad or down.
A stable home life can cause a child to flourish emotionally and gain security. The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver includes the life of a young girl named Turtle, who previously experiences physically abuse in her household, leading her to be fearful and distrustful of others. She is taken in by Missy, who nurtures and shows her a stable household. After Turtle’s first visit to the doctor, the doctor says to Missy, “‘Sometimes in an environment of physical or emotional deprivation a child will simply stop growing, although certain internal maturation does continue. It’s a condition we call failure to thrive’
In both Kaye Gibbon’s Ellen Foster and Jeannette Walls's The Glass Castle the protagonists have to endure life growing up with minimal support from their parents or guardians. Both explore the difficulties they have to face growing up alone and how they overcome it. Child neglect forces children to learn and do things themselves. This level of independence at such a young age causes them to become more responsible than their peers and gives them determination to be different from their parents and learn from their own and their parents mistakes. When parents are absent from a majority of the childs life means that the child needs to provide their basic needs for him or herself.

“Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a realistic short story about a kid that has lost his parents, and had to move to his aunt's house that he doesn't know. He's very worried because he doesn’t want to live with a person that he doesn't know. But when he moves in, he see’s that she gives him his own space and doesn’t bother him. He say’s to himself this might not be as bad as I thought it would be. But after a while he got more bored and not having fun.

In the short story “Eleven”, Sandra Cisneros manages to convey a powerful message about growing up from the perspective of an eleven year old. The story starts out with Rachel, the protagonist, who is turning eleven today. It starts out with her at school while she's in math class.

Although my experiences are not as drastic as hers, she inspires me to make my own decisions. As I grow, I realize more that my independence is important because I cannot rely on other people as much since everyone’s experiences are different. For example, when they were children in Guyana, my parents had to walk miles to school while I am able to take the bus to school. Although my parents and I went to school up until the same age, our experiences lead to different approaches in situations. The transition from middle school to high school was eye opening because in middle school the class would move together, whereas in high school, everyone went their own ways.

He is famous for his specific style of writing, the so called iceberg theory, which is clearly seen in his short stories and novels. Undoubtedly the unique thing that makes his short stories so special is the fact that after you read them you get the main idea but there are many things that remain unspoken or have a deeper meaning. You have to reread the text and use your imagination to get the whole picture of the text.
