Las posadas is celebrated from December 16th to the 24th, the nine nights leading up until Christmas. The nine nights represent the nine months that Joseph was in Mary's womb. Posadas may sometimes be confused as a Christmas party, but they are in fact a religious event. Las posadas honor the journey from Nazareth to Bethleham that Mary and Joseph made in search of a place of refuge where baby Jesus could be given birth to by Mary.
The Mexican Kickapoo, or Tribu Kikapú, are a binational indigenous people, as some of whom reside in both Mexico and the United States. In Mexico, they were allocated land at Hacienda del Nacimiento near the town of Múzquiz in the state of Coahuila in 1850. A small group of Kickapoo also live in the state of Sonora. The Mexican Kickapoo often work as migrants in Texas and move throughout the Midwest and the western United States working as farm labor before returning to Mexico for the winter (Mexican Kickapoo).

Delia Webster was a teacher and abolitionist in Kentucky, where she was a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Tried and convicted for helping runaway slaves in their escape to freedom, she was the first woman imprisoned for assisting fugitive slaves. Webster was also an artist, writer, and an independent woman, unusual for her time. Delia Ann Webster was born December 17, 1817, one of four daughters born to Benejah and Esther Bostwick Webster in Vergennes, Vermont.

They did not eat during the day and ate very little at night. Many enslaved men and women were treated very cruelly by the Portuguese men and it was almost impossible for enslaved men to become free in the same manner as enslaved woman were. Sometimes enslaved women would try and reproduce with white masters as a way of giving themselves or their children a better social status but this wasn’t always consensual. Most enslaved women were segregated against, abused, and raped by their masters, especially those of pure African ancestry. Mixed slaves such as Afro-Brazilians were treated a little better and more likely to achieve freedom as in Chica da Silva’s case. Free women were treated better than slaves in 18th century Brazil but were still segregated against.

Due to U.S. governmental and economic interventions in Latin American countries, it has caused many people to migrate as refuges and flee unstable environments. These mass migrations have been followed by torturous trails and stories that many times end in death or abuse, however, other times it has allowed refugees to move away and live stable lives in the U.S. However, once in the U.S., these immigrants are faced with discriminatory policy based on false accusations that makes their lives unsafe and unprotected. Therefore, Latinx religious faith becomes a strong component of community for these groups.

Ana Buha is a wise woman from a small place in the heart of Bosnia & Herzegovina called Vitez. She is a hard-working mother and wife. Ana is my grandmother who gave everything to her three kids: my mom, and two of my uncles. She is one of the most interesting and funny people I know.
