The American Dream is a dream that all mankind has. A lot of the common people place confidence in the fact that poverty is one of the biggest factors holding people back from that dream. People who agree that poverty is detrimental and will not let people achieve the American Dream find ways to help them be able to experience it. Some people might assume that poverty actually helps them achieve the American Dream. Each year the poverty rates are increasing tremendously and will keep increasing if no one takes action. Even though there are many thoughts on this topic, discriminating the people in poverty is very unfair and is unnecessary.

In the essay, "Two Ways To Belong in America", the author writes about how people discriminate the poor for being poor. "Arriving with relatively little education. My grandfather took a job in the stockyards and lived in an Irish boating house nearby. Espinoza started as a dishwasher and lived with his brother in a Mexican neighborhood." (Tierny 1). Tierny states that Espinoza’s grandfather is treated with respect, but the immigrants, Espinoza, were not. This related to poverty discrimination. The Readers can infer that immigrants are like the poor and his grandfather represents the people in the higher class.
