The highest tier of my background is my family. Whether a soccer game, barbeque, Christmas day, or Kwanzaa feast, my family has unceasingly been the keystone of my life. Being the oldest of four siblings has been a rewarding experience. I have acquired acute listening, empathy, compassion, conflict resolution, and a love for learning. My family has shaped me to be a good listener. Being a good listener means much more than just waiting for one’s turn to talk. It is about wholeheartedly analyzing and processing something someone is saying. My mother played her flute whenever she could and several of my great uncles have been jazz musicians. I knew that I wanted to play an instrument as well. When band commenced the beginning of fourth grade, I had no doubt I wanted to play the saxophone, and I have not looked back since. Playing the saxophone and being in band will always hold a precious place in my heart. It has become a unique part of my character and has grown with me through times of triumph and tears. My academic excellence is another trait I have gained from my family. My parents taught me to give my greatest effort in school, so I could achieve my goals and dreams. This was especially helpful to me in middle school. My classmates thought I had to act a certain way because of my skin color, and getting high marks did not fit that stereotype. Through my family, I found strength to rise above their small minded expectations and be the greatest version of myself. My strong family unit helped me realize that there is beauty in differences. In summary, my family has helped me acquire my personal traits. These include listening skills, empathy, compassion, conflict resolution, and educational passion.
