One home remedy that I remember that my Mexican grandmother, called guelita, does, is that she would always use an egg and plant, called ruta, and will begin to rub both the plant and the egg all around our whole family’s body. As a kid I remember each time I spend the night over at my guelita’s house, she will grab an egg and a piece of the ruta plant and tell to stand still, so she can start rubbing the egg and plant all over my body every time right before I go to sleep. And every time I ask her why does she do that, she explains to me is that, all she is doing is blessing me and getting rid of any bad spirits or the evil eye from me and that it will also help me get a good night sleep in the night. The Mexican Ojo is a old superstition that people believe that those of an higher status in live will drain your soul if they look at you. “Moreover, it was strongly feared that when a powerful person stares at a weak individual, the eyes of the strong person drain the power and soul from the weak one regardless of intentions.” (Michigan State). This is an old Mexican superstition that people who believe in it will always try to cleanse it in some way. The way to get rid of any Mexican Ojos you may have gotten is that you will get a raw egg and begin rubbing your whole body. What my guelita does is that she will rub the egg all over my body and will begin to say a prayer in spanish. “Take a regular chicken egg (uncooked)raw. Light a candle and pass the egg over the flame several times while saying a prayer. Move the egg in a circular motion like you are gently scrubbing your body.” (The Egg Cleansing).
