Relationships can have positive and negative effects on people’s lives. Finding the balance between sharing each other’s love and keeping one’s sense of self and dignity can be a challenging task. In Shakespeare’s “Macbeth, Macbeth embodies this struggle. The weakness of love make the tragic outcome of the play almost predictable. When when the prophecies establish the leading desire of wealth, it is the both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth who are put in temptation. This temptation is mainly in the concern of Lady Macbeth. It is her wants which test’s Macbeth’s loyalty. The relationship between Macbeth and his wife has caused a pursuit for power, resulting in royalty, and eventually leading to him and his wife’s fate. When Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are first introduced in the play, it is made clear that they do love each other indefinitely. They love each other so much that they would do anything to please one another. When the prophecies come into play, and Lady Macbeth begins to pressure Macbeth into killing Duncan, Macbeth becomes torn between his conscience and his wife’s pursuit. He also rants on the topic of life, and how life is a meaningless illusion that we carry on with day to day. Especially at this point, Macbeth sees life as having no significance. It appears that he has slipped into a state of depression. Now that his wife is dead, he has come to realize the truth of how selfish and denial his wife had been towards him. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is only know as a hero, with some significance but a rather humble background. Him shifting his sense of self was all out of his wife’s pleasure.
