Have you ever wondered what makes a teenager a teenager? Throughout the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet , the author, William Shakespeare, inserts the thoughts of teenagers in tragic situations. The story is about two teenagers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, who fall in love with each other but have to face their parents who are sworn enemies, which leads to their untimely deaths. Today, scientists believe that teenagers’ brains favor reward over risk. If teens grow up without the right parental guidance, then they will not know about their limitations or self-discipline when they grow older. The lack of guidance from the parents is shown in the play. Romeo has been heart broken by Rosaline and then instantly falls in love with Juliet. It is right after this experience of “love at first sight”, so to speak, that Romeo wants to marry Juliet. According to the play, “It is my lady, O it is my love.” (2.2.11) here, Romeo is declaring his love for Juliet just by seeing her. In the play, Mercutio walks around talking trash about everyone and this leads to fights breaking out. “Tybalt you rat-catcher, will you walk?” (3.1.65-68) This quote shows how Mercutio might not have grown up with the right father figure to show how a young man is to act and treat people. No parent wants their child to be a troublemaker. “A plague o’both your houses! Zounds, a dog, a rat, a mouse, a cat to scratch a man to death! A braggart, a rogue, a villain that fights by the book of arithmetic!” (3.1.67-70) This statement proves that even though Mercutio is badly hurt, he is still picking and mocking; this means he is looking for a fight.
