The American dream is one that many individuals around the world hope to accomplish. For those who have already fought and sought out their American dream, it can be more difficult for them to have empathy for others. Seeing that they achieved their goals and aspirations, they might find it unnecessary to care for their lower class counterparts. In both “The Great Gatsby” and “Glengarry Glen Ross”, the characters seem to mirror this idea well and lack the basic appropriate qualities that make up a decent individual. Having said this, the characters in these plays are not necessarily the bad guys, just the odd ones out. In this case, the bigger picture here being that American citizens are the ones to blame for what is going on in our society, not the President. Trump is not dividing us, but we are dividing ourselves into these categories. The statues of America cannot be represented by one individual, but by all of us citizens. In Fitzgerald's novel, Gatsby is set to repeat the past and cannot live in the present. Similarly, in Mamet’s novel, Roma states “ Our life is lookin’ forward, or it’s lookin back… Where’s the moment?”. In both novels, the characters live for either the past or future and not the present. In our society, the only way to fix the issues is to stop looking back into our past history, stop looking at the future of our history, and start taking action now. We are not helping ourselves by constantly bringing up America’s dark past regarding black history. Instead of blaming and pointing fingers at each other, calling others racist, sexist, etc., Americans have to come together and accept each other. While the words of Donald Trump may hurt others, that gives no right for anyone to jump to conclusions. After all, actions speak much louder than words and if Trump can help fix the divide in our country, that is all that truly
