Survival is defined as the continuation of existence in spite of difficult circumstances. The theme survival is present throughout each of the sources “The Most Dangerous Game”, “A Trip to the Edge of Survival”, and The Fugitive. In “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford falls overboard a ship and is stranded on an island where he finds loggings with its sole inhabitants, General Zaroff and Ivan; Zaroff reveals intensions to hunt Rainsford, but Rainsford is able to use his survival skills to outwit the general. Likewise, in “A Trip to the Edge of Survival”, a crew is stranded in the middle of the ocean and uses nothing but their wits and resources aboard the ship to survive. For instance, in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford tumbled off of a yacht and quickly swam in the direction he heard gun shots fired. His quick witted decision was smart because the source of the gun shots were not only within hearing distance, but were almost certainly on land. If Rainsford would have attempted to swim after the boat, he would have most likely drown. Furthermore, in the short story, “A Trip to the Edge of Survival”, the crew of the Cairo III trapped rain water using their weight to tilt runoff into gutters, which then filled barrels with fresh drinking water. Due to the lack of freshwater surrounding them, the members of the crew would have died of dehydration had it not been for their intelligent solution to collecting fresh drinking water. Finally, Richard Kimble, from the movie The Fugitive, displayed intelligence when he shaved off, and dyed his facial hair.
