Character Analysis of George “Friends show their love in times of trouble, not in happiness,” a quote about friendship from Euripides, a. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, two companions, George and Lennie, who work from place to place in California’s dusty vegetable fields trying to make enough money to own their own land. George is small in frame, witty, and had tanned skin, while Lennie is the complete opposite, big, strong, but has a mind like a child. In the novel Of Mice and Men, George often keeps to himself and tries not to draw attention to himself, also he is cautious and loyal to his companion Lennie. Another character trait to describe George is that he is cautious. “‘’Course you did. Well, look. Lennie--if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an’ hide in the brush.’”stated on page 15 in paragraph 7. This shows that George is very aware of the possibility of Lennie possibly doing something bad, so he takes precautions for the possible. This quotation is foreshadowing upcoming events involving Lennie getting himself in trouble. “‘O.K. Give me a couple of minutes then, and you come runnin’ out an’ tell like you jus’ found her. I’m going now.’ George turned and went quickly out of the barn.” stated on page 95 in paragraph 6. In this quotation from the novel, George and Candy just found out that Lennie killed Curley’s wife, but George knows he did not do it on purpose so he goes to find him first before Curley and the others find him. In the novel, George cares for Lennie like his child throughout the novel because of Lennie’s slowness of the mind. George has learned to be caution to protect Lennie in these types of situations and is very loyal to Lennie the way a loyal friend would. This is evident throughout the novel when the rest of the characters would mention it, George would immediately, almost automatically, go into defensive mode for Lennie. On page 40 of the 2nd paragraph, George is confessing to Slim how he used to treat Lennie because he was so dumb and would do anything he said but he stopped. “‘I turns to Lennie and says, ‘Jump in.’ An’ he jumps. Couldn’t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him....clean forgot I told him to jump in. Well, I ain’t done nothing like that no more.” This shows that even though George once treated Lennie like that, he came to love and care for Lennie even if he does not say it often, but you know how men are. George has learned to be there for Lennie even when times got rough. “And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle up close to the back of Lennie’s head...He pulled the trigger.” as stated by the author on page 106 in paragraph 13. In this quotation, George has found Lennie right where he told him to go whenever he gets in trouble. A little while before this tragic event occurred, Slim and another character took Candy’ dog, a smelly old dog that is also blind, out and killed him to “put him out of his misery.” This relates to George and Lennie’s situation because George knew where Lennie was going to be, so got to Lennie first because he did not want
