Activism Have you ever seen rallies with people holding signs up, or protests when people chain themselves to trees? This is activism, and, contrary to popular belief, activism is helping the world. This chapter is going to explain what activism is and how it helps the community. What is Activism? Activism is when someone thinks that there needs to be a change, and does something about it. In the words of Dictionary.com, the definition of activism is ‘the doctrine or practice of vigorous action or involvement as a means of achieving political or other goals, sometimes by demonstrations,protests.’ In conclusion, activists stand up to people, and tell them how they feel about something to make a change. Most people though, just treat animals like they are some garbage lying around the house just because they are not human and they don’t speak the same language as us, and some people think that they don’t feel anything, and what they do to the animals does not matter. Well, they are wrong, it does matter, these animals are just the same as us, they just speak their own language, and are designed differently. I once heard my Faith Formation teacher tell me and my class that animals don’t understand anything going on around them, and they don’t realize what’s happening to them, so what we do to them doesn’t matter because they don’t have souls or feelings - but, she’s wrong. Animals need to eat, breath, play, run around just like we do. They get sad when their owner passes away or goes out for a bit. They get defensive when someone walks on their area. They are happy and playful when they go outside and play fetch, and they are hungry when they are deprived of food, but people don’t think about this. I should know, I own a dog who whines at the window when my dad goes to work, and when he plays fetch in the back yard, or runs around with my sister and my cousins he gets really
