These oppressions have been in place since slavery and is still thriving within the African American community. Although African Americans use their united family system and religion as one of the ways to combat oppression the risk of being exposed to oppressive measures are high. The idea of oppression was evident when I arrived at the individual’s home. The family resided in a neighborhood which is known for moderate crime activity. Also, it is located on Georgia Southern University College campus, which is not a good environment to raise children. When Traci was asked why she chose the area she explained “I don’t have options. Statesboro does not have many living areas catered toward the average local family. Statesboro either builds homes for the college students or for the rich part of town. The little neighborhoods I can afford are over polluted, full of crime, and ran down. Although these apartments aren’t the best they are better than the ones made for the locals.
