From 1860 to 1939 freedom had been stretched to points it had never seen before. Over this time period so many things had happened, ideas of freedom were used in ways no one had used it before. While freedom for some races where making growth others were declining fast. Many lessons learned from and used to shape the country today. Starting off with the civil war, lives of Africans Americans started to change.
After the Civil War was over their was supposed to be a new birth of freedom for the African American people. From 1865 to 1875 America was going under reconstruction to reunite the north and the south. One of the first incidents was the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln's main goal as the president was to abolish slavery, and give citizenship and rights to the African Americans. After his death the reconstruction of America didn’t happen as he hoped it would have. The people in Harlem and New York city were living life to the fullest. In New York City their were millions of dollars being made in Wall St. and people were using that to buy cars, luxury goods, and big homes. People were also using their money to go out to the clubs and see musicians like Louis Armstrong perform. Some people would even save up to go out and join in on the night life. The Harlem Renaissance were happening at the same time. Harlem was the new place for African American folks. It was a place where they were able to get jobs, money and if they were talented enough become famous like Bessie Smith, a famous blues singer. Harlem was a place African Americans were given freedom they had never really seen before, it was a new life they had always dreamed about. With freedom getting pushed to its fullest potentials it could never last
