Lincoln was assassinated in around April 15, 1865, but do you know what happened to the United States after the assassination occurred? The Reconstruction was going on, Lincoln was only alive to say what he wanted to do but never got to do anything that he said he would do. So the Reconstruction and its progress rested on the incoming President Andrew Johnson. The events that happened during this time were major in the making of the United States, it is still influential to this day. The people of the United States during the Reconstruction era highlights how important the past can impact the future reminding us that what we do needs to be for the best.

One of the most important people was, of course, Andrew Johnson, he was the first president to get impeached, he made it harder for Congress to do many big things, and he was very passive with Reconstructing the South. By the time he was impeached he had done a lot of damage, he had hurt the South by letting them get out of control, there were unnecessary black codes and very few things got past his desk, many were vetoed. The only thing that got past his desk was the Amnesty Proclamation that Johnson created. The others were vetoed by him and soon they would be overridden by the Congress. It was a very rough time for the Congress because they wanted to do many things that would help the South but instead, they had to do everything the hard way getting around that vetoes because Johnson thought that it wasn’t right to interfere with the south and that they could reconstruct themselves.

Another important person was Edwin Stanton, he was the Secretary of State and he was one of the main reasons that the Johnson got impeached. On February 21, 1868, Johnson had decided that Stanton wasn’t good enough for him so he decided to fire him and replace him with General Thomas. This didn’t go over well with Congress and they had been discussing impeaching Johnson for a short time already. So they decided to produce a formal impeachment. This impeachment had 11 articles against Johnson and 9 of them were because Johnson removed
