The Identity of a First-Generation Asian American As a first-generation Asian American, I have grown up living with two identities.In the years of growing, I am still searching for the middle ground among the two. I live in a society where color still matters and multiculturalism is not fully accepted.As a result, I have found it difficult to be a part of the culture I am familiar with, yet I feel so disconnected. Being born and raised in America, I am a Vietnamese-American, born to immigrant parents, where I am fluent in English and I even know Vietnamese. As an Asian-American, it is hard living a double life, especially when my life is split into the American and Asian culture. For example, the American culture values the person, where the Asian culture values the community. In the Asian culture, people would assume that your child will attend an Ivy League school and become a doctor or a lawyer. Oddly enough, there was a time where I wanted to be a doctor because everyone pressured me. Then I realized that this is my future and that I should study something that I enjoy than being told. Therefore, I decided to major in business, but more specifically in accounting. I became interested in this major ever since I took the class in tenth grade. I decided to take this class because it was a subject where I have not taken before. Before I knew it, it sparked my interested because I am applying my knowledge to the real world by understanding how business works. As a result, I said that I am going to study accounting. From my perspective, I believe that I should attend a school where I see myself enjoying every single moment and experience on the campus.
