The Burmese Python is one of the largest snakes in the world. The biggest ones caught in Florida average between 6 feet and 9 feet. The largest snake caught was surprising 17 feet. They are often found near or in water in the environment and can be seen climbing trees as well. They can’t be owned as pets anymore in the state of Florida. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service prevents the burmese pythons from being imported across state lines. This species has been reported to be seen in the Florida Everglades since the 1980s. It is thought that they escaped from a breeding facility and that was demolished during a hurricane and/or pet pythons were released near or in the Everglades. People who register through Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have the ability to hunt and kill the snakes, but for a good cause. Reference 3 explains the good cause, “Scientists fear the invasive species might wipe out certain native mammals. Raccoons, rabbits, foxes and even the Florida panther could all be at risk”. This is a chance to keep the species under control and return the Everglades back to its original environment. Hunting of the burmese pythons is also quite enjoyable for some residents of South Florida who are willing to do what they can to help the environment thrive again. The evidence presented has been proven to be true through observations that have come from scientists and scientific organizations like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The concerns of the burmese pythons are their few predators, their many prey, and their ability to harm their new environment. It shocked me that one kind of snake can have such a negative impact on nature as whole, but I am glad to hear that residents of the community are taking
