According to a professor Matthew Robinson, PhD, social justice is defined as “… promoting a just society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity.” He explains further, saying that social justice exists when “all people share a common humanity and therefore have a right to equitable treatment, support for their human rights, and a fair allocation of community resources.” I wanted to have a clear definition that could fit with the work that I am doing this summer. At Cinco Puntos Press (CPP), a publishing company that since its inception has been thriving to publish diverse books. Books about the Chicano experience, as well as other ethnicities, people with disabilities, even representing the LGBT spectrum, amongst others. In fact, a requirement for the editor to even consider a literary work, is that it should have a diverse element, because diverse elements can be universal elements. CPP is trying to increase representation in the book market and make people understand that, as humans, we all share a “common humanity.” In other words, people can learn universal lessons from anybody. One does not need to be of certain ethnicity or any other intersectionality, in order to teach others, life lessons, and that is sort of the main importance to why we read books.
