Directed by the mysteriously macabre Tim Burton, Corpse Bride is a dark, musical animation featuring the voices of the lovely Johnny Depp, Emily Watson and Helena Bonham Carter. Unlike most other Tim Burton films, this one follows the path of romance with a slight plot twist. I absolutely loved this as a child, so I most definitely recommend this as a must-see movie. Rated PG, it is the perfect movie for children and families.
It is about a young fellow called Victor, who was forced into marriage with a girl named Victoria, by his money greedy parents who don’t know the meaning of love. The world of the living is a very dark, depressing, overcast place, with most of the colours drained from it. The base colours green, grey and purple are even drained themselves, creating a very lonely and scary atmosphere. Apposed to this, the world of the afterlife is a very cheerful and fun place to be, using bright colours, Tim Burton conveyed what a joyful place it is. He used this contrast to show that afterlife was way more pleasant than being alive in the 1800’s.
Tim Burton chose to tell the story from Victor’s point of view to add to the themes of loneliness and isolation, as before he met Victoria, he was by himself, with no one but his parents to keep him company. The theme of longing was then introduced when we find out Emily’s devastating story, that she was murdered by her fiancé on the eve of their wedding. Ever since then, she has longed for someone to love, and for someone to love her. Despite being a skeleton, Emily was presented as a figure of sympathy, not horror.
Over all, I rate this amazing movie 4 ½ stars out of 5. Being a drama filled, fun fantasy, it’s a perfect movie for families. The animation in this movie is great, as well as the musical features, further adding to the appeal for
