The Death Penalty Should Not be Reintroduced to Australia
The death penalty. Commonly used as capital punishment in fifty-six countries for severe crimes. Is a capital punishment that should remain abolished in Australia. This inhumane, cruel injustice used as a “punishment” is used on death row prisoners that may not even be guilty. Furthermore, failure to administer the penalty and the cost of it is a far more pressing issue in those countries that chose to preserve the penalty.
Firstly, wrongful convictions are a factor that we must consider. No one can be sure if you're convicting the right person. And with being given the death penalty, there is no room for mistakes. Yet more and more people are being wrongfully convicted. Execution is irreversible, since 1973 more than 190 Americans have been released from death row with proof of innocence. The Scottsboro Boys case is a prime example of this. The Scottsboro case is the case of nine African-American teenage boys accused of raping two white women in Scottsboro, America, in 1931. And the methods of execution are cruel and appalling. Countless individuals said, “The death penalty is the most degrading punishment and should be considered torture”. The history of the death penalty shows that not one of the methods used is humane. Witnesses on multiple accounts have seen the prisoner not being properly anaesthetised. Even the creator of the lethal injection has been quoted saying “I don’t want prison execution to be my legacy”. Dr Jay Chapman, the creator himself doesn’t even want to be associated with it. What does that tell you? The opposing view may say “An eye for an eye” but with the death penalty it is clear to see that “Two wrongs don’t make a right” is more fitting.
