In the mystery, “And Then There Were None,” by Agatha Christie, Dr. Edward Armstrong is a character who deserves sympathy for many reasons. In the novel 10 people who are guilty of crimes not touchable by the law are placed on an island together. They receive letters from an unknown man named U.N Owen that invited them to a famous island called Soldier Island owned by a millionaire. U.N Owen has put himself on the island as one of the 10 guests where he kills all of the guests off in different ways. In the end, U.N Owen or Lawrence Wargrave leaves a note in a bottle and throws it into the sea for somebody to read, after everyone on the island is killed Lawrence Wargrave shoots himself in the forehead. Reasons for Dr. Edward Armstrong deserving sympathy include mistakes from the past haunting him and characters taking advantage of him for his weaknesses and then continuing to blame him. …show more content…

On page 294 Justice Wargrave wrote down, “I selected Dr. Armstrong for that part. He was a gullible sort of man, he knew me by sight and reputation and it was inconceivable to him that a man of my standing could actually be a murderer!” This quote explains one of the many times that he was taking advantage of others. Earlier in the book he was suspected of killing Emily Brent because he was the only one on the island with the needle to kill her. The others on the island refer to him as a gullible man and easy to take advantage of because he is struggling with personal problems that affect him. Dr. Edward Armstrong struggles with alcohol addiction and other addictions. For this reason, Dr. Edward Armstrong deserves sympathy because the others on the island are always taking advantage of him and blaming
