To Be Kind In preschool, and throughout elementary school, I had always been taught that “if [I] didn’t have anything nice to say, then [not to] say anything at all.” This phrase is something that I, and all of my peers, have heard essentially my entire life. In the Southern colonies, children usually started their education at home. (It was not super important to them). The distances between farms and plantations made town schools very hard to get to. Plantation owners regularly hired tutors or house maids to teach boys’ math, classical languages, science, geography, history, etiquette, and plantation management. Also, I learned that due to the increase of immigrants arriving to Europe, religion (Catholic v.s. Protestant) became a controversial issue in the common schools. After reading education in the U.S. from 1900-1950, I learned that due to limited amount of space in the classroom, many students had to attend school part-time. Education improved in the 1800’s due the efforts of many people opening opportunities. This included Horace Mann, the head of the Massachusetts state board of education. For 12 years, Mann hounded state legislators to provide more money for education. Eventually, Mann led Massachusetts to build more schools, extend the school year, give the teachers a higher pay, and open three colleges for training teachers. Many northern states followed this path and began to open free elementary schools supported by taxes.
Clearly, the introduction of public education has had immense impact on American society. With it 's establishment historically, came a substantial accrual in the overall education level of the citizens of the United States. Recently, public education has become perceived as being the “standard” way to educate students. However, the history of public education is rather brief when compared with other education methods, there are numerous misconceptions regarding the quality of public education, and there are many detrimental effects on individuals and families, which are often overlooked in light of a handful of touted benefits.
There is a third reason which is the Most important reason, is to get a great picture of the cultural diversity of the United States of America. Knowledge of others, their cultures, their sciences and way of life, is useful for learning about a new culture. Some cultures have good qualities and bad recipes, or perhaps do not fit the nature of our lives. For example, my presence in America has made me learn a lot of American cultures that if I find them in my country and may be useful to me or in raising my children such as opening the door to the person walks behind me, honestly I like this behavior which I miss this in my country. In general, the idea of quoting the culture that suits our societies may help us to develop from the reality of our lives.
Change is occurring in society at a rapid speed. Change may be described as the adoption of an innovation (Carlopio 1998), where the ultimate goal is to improve outcomes through an alteration of practices. The above saying can truly be applied on the modern education system. The society in the twenty first century is increasingly diverse, globalized, and complex and media-saturated. In today’s world of technology, the olden education system with its teacher-centered approach, passive learning, time based, textbook driven, fragmented curriculum, low expectations from the learner does not seem to cater to the learning needs of twenty first century students.
