I was the only Asian student in my school growing up. In Colombia, the school models are different from the United States, because Pre-school, elementary school, middle school, and high school are merged together into one “super school”, essentially you grow up with the people that you went to pre – school with. This model allows for students to create deeper bonds with their classmates because friendships last a very long time, but it also limits students to be with the same people their whole life, truncating their social skills and their ability to make new friends. when I was in elementary school, his drive to make blacks and whites equal and push for all around equality so that in the eyes of society we were all the same was essentially what I dreamed off and what I wanted my life to look like when I grew up. Ever since then I knew I wanted to explore the laws that our society lives by and how they change across the globe. The United States always seemed like the place to do so, because throughout history they have struggled with the American experiment of equality for all, in all aspects of society. Sadly, when I first arrived to the United States to study at Northeastern University I discovered that there is still a racial gap in this country, that even though decades had passed since the civil rights movement, we’re still confronted with racism and discrimination not only against people of other races but of their sexual orientation, religion, political views, etc. Seeing that even in the U.S, there was still much work to be done made me think about my struggle to fit in my community years back. My passion for equality and social justice has only grown since I got here and even drove me to switch majors from business administration to political science and criminal justice. In the years leading up to my graduation I have learned that in order to create tolerance for people that are different we as a society have to become educated on our differences and learn that being different shouldn’t be a threat to anyone’s position or
