1. What does the author mean by the particular right he or she is referring to? First of all, I chose to read the article, Equality in a Multicultural Society, which is written by Bhikhu Papekh. The article discussed about equality in a multicultural society by pointing out several cases that happened in our daily life. The reading is focusing on discussion rights of equality between a homogenous society and an intercultural society. Generally, ‘‘Equality implies equal treatment of those judged to be equal in relevant respects.’’ that what stated in the article but meanwhile the author mentioned that right of equality in a culturally homogenous society is much easier to achieve than in an intercultural society due to the similarity of the …show more content…

Here’s one of the examples that mentioned in the article. When the British government passed the law that required all of motorcycle riders wear clash helmets. But, Sikhs is strongly against the law because they seen the turban as religious symbol that cannot take away from them which didn’t persuaded the judges. Then, they challenged from the perspective of safety, they believe the turban is as safe as a clash helmet. Luckily, the British government agreed the argument and amended the law in which it written down the turban as one of headgear like a clash helmet. Another example from the article is can Muslims girls wear a hijab, which is seen as a religious symbol to the laicite of French schools. Is the cross of Christianity is equal to the symbol of hijab in Islam? Some argued that the hijab is symbol of oppression of girls, but at the same time, who knows wearing the cross and hijab is an action of willingness or unwillingness. In the past, people always fight for rights of equality. There’re different aspects of equality like equal respects, equal opportunity, equal before the laws and principles of equality and so on. While developing rights of equality, it’s important to stretch a balance between maintain fairness but not becoming injustice and privilege. When we live in a multicultural diverse society, it’s significant important to know the differences between each other and try to respect one and another.
