Introduction The family is the basic unit of our society, according to Friedman. Families are made up of many individuals that each have their own personalities, values, and beliefs. Although there are differences within the family, the family can still be a functioning unit. In the family analysis, I will be assessing the Reyes family. He is the one that makes the final decision regarding a topic. He will take the other family members input, but the decision is truly based on what he decides. This is because he is acknowledged at as the head of the household. Therefore the power hierarchy begins with the parents and then the children. The father is also the resource power because he is the breadwinner. He is the one bringing in the money for the family. The mother is a stay at home mom so she takes care of the needs of Mr. Reyes and the children. It seems like because of the cultural beliefs the children are afraid to open up to their father and tell them how they really feel. Even as adults, they avoid communicating with their father because they believe they will upset him. This is a problem because they are a close family and in order to remain close, they need to have functional communication. “Functional communication is viewed as the cornerstone of a successful, healthy family as the clear, direct transmission and reception of both the content and instruction level of any message”(Friedman, Bowden & Jones, 2003 p. 271).
