Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass First, important event in the book “The Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass” in chapter six, is when Douglass is about seven years old and was sent to a new master in Baltimore, Maryland to work for Mr. Auld. The wife of the master Mrs. Auld was teaching Douglass how to read tell her husband made her stop. Although they were very kind to Douglass it is just upsetting that he did not let him continue learning to read and write. I believe that this event changed Douglass’s life because by learning how to read it made him feel that there is something powerful about being educated. Also I think that he have thought that it may have been natural since he was born into slavery as a child but did not quite understand why this is happening to him and probably thought that black people were supposed to work for the white. He may have experienced these emotions because in chapter one when he was younger he witnessed Aunt Hester being whipped by Captain Anthony due to her being found with Lloyd's Ned. Also another time is when Douglass goes and works for Mr. and Mrs. Auld, he did not know how to act when around them because they were a more kind slaveholder. Mrs. Auld began to teach douglass to read and write tell Mr. Auld made her stop. This is when I believe that Douglass learned there is a separation against whites and black. Due to the situation Douglass than thought that learning to read and write was a very powerful thing and found ways to learn without Mr. Auld knowing. Another event that happened in chapter ten when Mr. Covey gave Douglass his first whipping after he crashed his cart in the middle of thick wood due to the untamed oxen. I think that these three events support my reasoning of why he thinks this way about his portrayal of slaveholders because it show different events that happened throughout the book to prove to you that he may of thought this way about the slave
