Garden City Movement The garden city concept is an urban planning method that was inaugurated by Sir Ebenzer Howard in the United Kingdom in 1898. Howard disliked the way cities at the time were being developed and believed that people should live in an environment that had the best aspects of both city and countryside. So his concept was based on the belief that a new civilization could be found by merging the town and country. The Garden City concept proposed the creation of new suburban towns of limited size, planned in advance and with proportionate areas of residences, agriculture and industry. At the centre of the city would be the ringed garden with the civic and cultural functions such as the city hall, library, hospital and concert hall. On the next concentric garden ring is where the park, shopping centre, residential area and conservatory will be. And then the outer ring of the city will be the industrial area. Traffic is planned to move on the streeets along the radii that connects the concentric boulevards radiating from the centre. So basically the garden city is a town that is free of slums, with a good quality of life and is able to enjoy the benefits of both town and country. So it has good emplyment opportunities, entertainment, well-serviced and also natural beauty, fresh air and open spaces. These garden cities of tomorrow proposed a reorganized society with networks of garden cities that would break free of capitalism and lead to cooperative socialism.
