I just spent a wonderful weekend providing a needed service for my community and also making myself feel wonderful for providing volunteer services that very few people feel like they are capable of doing. Let me tell you all about my weekend. It started out on Friday morning when I got up and proceeded to trip over my suitcase which was at the end of my bed, pulling my Renaissance fair costume off the hanger in the process of trying to not fall over. This reminded me that I needed to finish packing because I would be leaving around 12:00 to go to Handicapable Camp. Handicapable Camp is an overnight respite camp for individuals 12 and over with mild to moderate disabilities. This camp held yearly at Bradford Woods in Martinsville, Indiana the second weekend of September. Any camper is welcome to attend if the medical staff and volunteers can meet the individual’s needs. A local Boy Scout troop which volunteers on Friday evening help by escorting the campers back to their cabins and bringing wagons holding their personal belongings. When they show up at the cabin it is our responsibility to carry their overnight gear into the cabin help them choose and make their bed, then escorted them back into the main room and get them involved in cabin activities. Around 6:00 pm the Boy Scouts will deliver Subway sandwiches and cookies to our cabin. After supper, it was time to get ready for the themed dance of Lords and Ladies. I asked Jamie if she had brought a costume for the dance and she said yes. It was now 3:30 PM and time to go to Baxter’s dining hall for the mandatory volunteer meeting before the campers started showing up.
