What does hunger mean to you? Does it mean not having that one burger that you saw on television and have been craving all week? Well, to a lot of people in America, hunger means not knowing where their next meal will come from, or thinking about how at the end of the month, the food stamps are going to run out and they won’t be able to afford the food they need. Children and teens, along with adults need to think about the people that are starving before they throw away something that could save a life. Hunger in America is getting worse every day. People can go from living a good life where they have more than enough food, to having to rely on a food bank or food stamps. Nearly 38% of unemployed individuals have been unemployed for 6 months or more(feedingamerica). What does that have to do with hunger? Well a lot of these households have children, with children it is not just one mouth you have to feed. A lot of people think that if people who are hungry would get off of the couch and get a job that they might be okay, but it is not that simple and just because they don’t have a job doesn’t mean that they’re lazy. Each year since 2008 the number of food insecure people in the U.S. alone has hovered between 48 million and 50 million (1 in 6 people) (bread.org). As an example, in 2014, about 48.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households, including over 15 million children(feedingamerica). Sometimes people have to go back to school so that they can get another job after losing the one they had. Other times people can not afford to go back to school, so they have to get smaller jobs or get food stamps. In the time they don’t have a job, they are struggling to feed their family. So, no, hunger is not usually because of laziness as some people
