Inherit the Wind has many complex characters that can be compared and relatable to us today. In this essay I will be comparing myself to Rachel Brown, a character in Inherit The Wind. Inherit The Wind is a book written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. This book is written as a play that tells the story of a heated court case in which a teacher, Bert Cates, teaches evolution to his young students, in a predominantly christian town, and is then sent to jail. A court case soon follows, with Bert Case and his defense, Henry Drummond, against the town and their prosecutor, Matthew Brady. Rachel Brown is the daughter of the zealous preacher in their town.Throughout the story she is conflicted between siding with her friend Bert Cates, and her father Jeremiah Brown. At the beginning of the story, she tries to convince Bert that teaching evolution was wrong and that he should admit that he is wrong. Later in the book her father prays for God to destroy Bert, because his beliefs. Rachel feels like this was out of line and tries to stop her father, so he prays that God will destroy her too. I think this is the point in which Rachel starts to question her beliefs, and if they are doing the right thing. At the end of the book, Rachel doesn’t agree with Darwin’s theory, but she thinks that people should be able to think freely and decide things for themselves. I think very logically and I tend to think things through thoroughly before coming at a consensus. I like learning more about other people's views to understand both sides of a topic, and also to strengthen and modify my own beliefs. Justice and free will are very important to me and I try to do what I can to make sure things that I can control are fair. I try to be open to new ideas and learn about ideas different from mine to strengthen my own
