It is important for everyone to protect their skin, but especially people with lighter complexion. These people have very little melanin to protect themselves. Babies and older adults should also be very careful when being exposed to direct UV from the sun. Skin types and burns are put into five groups. The most at risk are group one. These people are those with fair skin and blue eyes. Group five are those of dark skin. These people have higher amounts of melanin to protect them and rarely ever burn. Sunburns are caused when the UV radiation comes from the sun. When the skin is burned skin, cells are destroyed. A couple days later after being burned bacteria and viruses spread dead tissue. Burns are placed into three categories. The first category is a First Degree Burn. This is when only the epidermis is damaged. The skin will turn red and the person may have painful skin. The second category is a Second Degree Burns. In a second degree burn the epidermis and the dermis are damaged. Skin will be red and hurt. This burn may also cause blisters.
