The Structure and Functions of the Integumentary system The integumentary system consists of the skin, hair, and nails according to Mr. Andersons video, Integumentary System. However, it’s structure is much more complicated when going into detail of the skin which is expanded when he explains what makes the epidermis. In Mr. Anderson’s video, he explains that there are three layers of skin which are the epidermis, dermis, and the hypodermis which is also known as subcutaneous. Then it gets to the part where it’s a dream within a dream except this time it’s being replaced with a layer within a layer. What lies underneath the stratum corneum depends on if it’s thick, skin that has five layers of skin, or thin, skin that has four layers of skin. If the skin is thick, then the stratum lucidum is found underneath the top layer (the stratum corneum) which can be found in the palm of the hands as well as the soles of people's feet. Underneath the stratum lucidum/corneum is the stratum granulosum which is a layer of compressed cells. The stratum spinosum is the layer under the stratum granulosum that is composed of keratinocytes with different thickness according to the video, The Integumentary System - What’s the Epidermal Layer of the Skin. The last but not the least layer is the Stratum Basale which is the layer at the bottom which is crooked and forms the dermal papilla. The second layer of skin is the dermis where it contains the capillaries, the sweat and sebaceous gland, and the tactile
