Beyond Slated “I want to run right now, but I am hemmed in on the bus, bodies all around. I concentrate on Ben’s warm hand, close my eyes, and wish myself anywhere but here (terry 163). In Slated by Teri Terry, Kyla has been memory wiped by the government. As she tries to find a way to uncover her dark past, her new parents are trying to keep it from her , but Kyla has forbidden flashbacks that help her unlock the secrets of her past and her former identity. Teenagers should read this book because of its unique connection to alzheimer's and dementia and its message that in some circumstances, it is beneficial when people find things out that they are not meant to. To begin, Slated contains references to memory loss diseases, such as dementia or alzheimer's. In the article, “Alzheimer's and Dementia Basics” the Alzheimer's Association states, “Alzheimer's is a brain disease that causes a slow decline in memory, thinking, and reasoning skills” (Alz.com). On page 70, Teri writes , “And i got the feeling that i didn't tell him everything”. The quotation proves that even though Kyla’s dad was trying to find out what she was hiding,she feels she didn’t tell him everything. The novel also states that “at the end of the day when i got on the bus , there were whispers; whispers and pale faces. Eyes walk up my spine as i go down the aisle and sit next to ben, but when i turn around no one meets my eyes “(terry 163). The evidence proves that Kyla was trying to figure out why she thinks that everyone is talking about her when really, no one is. Lastly, the author also writes, “imagination, cruel, and horrible, or traced of memory i should not have”(terry 284). And in the end, she is trying to understand the dreams that she has been having . are they dreams, or faint
