In the memoir, Abandoned, written by Anya Peters, the central idea is that a person can can overcome their hardships from the past, although it might not be easy. The author comes to realizes, “I was like a terrified child, trying to keep herself invisible so that no one would send her away” (Peters 334). Anya grew up with an abusive uncle and parents that could not keep her. She only ever wanted to feel like she belonged which leads her to spiral into decisions that were not well thought out and another abusive relationship. Now she is a full grown adult living in her car and she has no idea how to help herself cope with her past, and carry on in the future. The author emphasizes, “Sitting on the top deck with tears streaming down my face and his words crashing through my head, I was shaking uncontrollably, convinced he was sitting on the lower deck and would follow me to my new flat, and that I would never get away” (Peters 248). Sure enough, Anya left her emotionally abusive boyfriend, Craig, and got away. She kept on hoping for a better life, left Craig, and never went back to him, no matter how bad things got for her. The author mentions in the “Epilogue,” I know it will be a difficult road ahead as I re-adjust and come to terms with everything that has happened, but everything feels possible again, and I’m feeling positive” (Peters 341).
